A Whale Of A Time
It could have been an ecological disaster - three pilot whales and a dolphin stranded on the banks of the Humber.
But help was at hand. Volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue turned out in force to help steer them back out to sea. The fact that all four mammals were inflatable and filled with water rather than blubber made it no less difficult.
Keen scuba diver Sue Sweeney, AMIT Project Communication and Administration Manager at BP has been a member of the BDMLR for just over a year. "Mass strandings tend to occur most between March to July and November/December in this area." she explains. "This was a training exercise to sharpen our skills for dealing with the real thing."
Rescue teams from all over the country converged on Hessle to help refloat the whales - each weighing two tons and measuring 16' from top to bottom. Sharon Hodgson is a local co-ordinator for the BDMLR and says nationwide they go out
